Holtgrieve and Young sounds more like a law firm than the last names of two significant contributors to the game of golf. Jim Holtgrieve, a three-time participant and two-time captain of the U.S. Walker Cup team, will lead this year’s team in the 2013 Walker Cup at National Golf Links of America. Phil Young is a A.W. Tillinghast historian, author and a constant reference to golf course architects who are looking to recapture the golden age of golf course architecture and to golf clubs around the country who wish to remember their club’s storied past. Both men were featured on the On Par radio show to discuss the upcoming Walker Cup and one of Long Island’s most treasured golf courses-National Golf Links of America.

Saturday Aug 03, 2013
Saturday Aug 03, 2013
Joseph Gannascoli is most known for his character Vito Spatafore on the hit television series The Sopranos, but there is much more to this talented individual. Gannascoli is a renown chef, author and has an exhausting entrepreneurial spirit. He’s opened restaurants, contributed to a series that will go down as one of the best in television history, offers all types of products for sale and has been a fixture at Eisenhower Park Golf Course.
In this brutally honest interview, Gannascoli talks about gambling away his own restaurant, the struggles and loneliness of a Hollywood actor and the inspiration for the closeted homosexual Vito Spatafore on The Sopranos.
A self-described “man of routine,” Gannascoli also hopes to make golf part of his routine again after a temporary leave from the game. Having had a double hip replacement and frustrated with his golf game, Gannascoli found it difficult to enjoy the game he once loved. Thankfully, he plans to rededicate himself over the Winter to getting both himself and his golf game back in shape so that he can return to gracing us with his presence on the fairways of Long Island.

3.17: Kevin Smith PGA- Montauk Downs Golf Course
Sunday Jul 28, 2013
Sunday Jul 28, 2013
The easternmost tip of Long Island, Montauk, has long been a favorite summer destination for those of us who call this peninsula home. “The End,” as it has come to be known, has grown tremendously in popularity in the last decade as a vacation spot for many including a huge population descending from Manhattan and most recently New Jersey, in the wake of Sandy. In fact, its season has extended well beyond Memorial Day to Labor Day to include the better part of six months. In addition to its beaches, restaurants, parks and boating opportunities, Montauk is home to one of the best public golf courses on Long Island–Montauk Downs. “The Downs” is both a beauty and a beast. Perhaps not the beast of a Bethpage Black, but from the tips and in high winds, it will no doubt eat your lunch.

Teaching isn’t easy. It takes a tremendous amount of passion and patience to effectively communicate something as challenging as the golf swing. Now throw in children with their short attention spans and typical hijinks and now you’re taking things to another level. Golf maybe challenging, but there is no reason why it can’t be fun to learn and few people teach children better than Kate Tempesta. At locations ranging from NYC to Montauk, “fun” is the bedrock of Kate’s teaching philosophy
