4.6 Southward Ho Country Club

Each Spring, there is a two-tournament right of passage for amateur golfers on Long Island. The first, is the Richardson Invitational held at the Seawane Club in Hewlett Harbor. Unfortunately, inclement weather has forced this year's Richardson Invitational to September. The second, is the Havemeyer Invitational held on the A.W. Tillinghast gem at Southward Ho. 

Southward Ho is in the process of working with Long Island native and A.W. Tillinghast expert, Phil Young to help restore Southward Ho to its original Tillinghast design. If the full plan comes to fruition, Southward Ho would now include one of only three original "Reef" holes designed by Tillinghast and a "Hell's Half Acre" or "Sahara." 

In this episode, the On Par radio show spoke with Havemeyer Invitational committee member, Lee Ann Lewis and committee chairman, John Halleron to discuss restoring the golf course to its original intent and how Horace Havemeyer saved Southward Ho.

4.5 Golf Writer, John Huggan

This episode, co-host Woody Lashen and I spoke with John Huggan. John writes for Golf Digest, Golf Word and The Scotsman. Huggan is one of the best in the business and he's opinions on the game of golf are always on point. We spoke about Donald Trump's role in the game of golf, The neglect of the USGA and R&A in protected the spirit of the game of golf and the legacy of R&A Chief Executive, Peter Dawson. 4.4 Kirk Oguri

Kirk Oguri is the Equipment Specialist at Pete's Golf and Asst. PGA Professional at the Greens of Half Hollow. Oguri is a wealth of knowledge on the equipment side of the game as well as when it comes to the golf swing itself. 4.3 LiGA President- Alan Finkelstein

The Long Island Golf Association continues to be the heart and soul of amateur golf on Long Island. This week, I spoke LIGA President, Alan Finkelstein. Please give back to the organization that makes local amateur competition a reality for Long Island golfers. 

4.2 Ron Sirak: 2014 Masters

This week, Golf Digest and Golf World's, Ron Sirak joined the program to discuss the 2014 Masters. We covered a lot of ground as Ron put the impact of the Drive, Chip and Putt into perspective. As well as discussed the achievements and prospect of Bubba Watson, Jordon Spieth, Fred Couples, Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott. 

4.1 Woody Lashen- Pete's Golf Shop

4-5-14 This week we kickoff season four with Co-Owner of Pete's Golf Shop, Woody Lashen. We talked about what Woody learned at this year's PGA Merchandise Show, the 2014 Masters and impact of having Paulina Gretzky on the cover of Golf Digest.

3.28 Golf Channel's Matt Ginella

I first caught up with Matt Ginella for a quick Q&A when he was the Senior Travel Editor at Golf Digest and I’ve made it a point to have him on the show at least once a year ever since. Matt is the consummate professional– thoughtful, honest and knows his business. Since then Ginella moved on to Golf Channelwhere he’s golfchannel.com’s travel insider. Matt also brings much to the table as a regular on Golf Channel’s Morning Driveas well, and still travels and plays more golf than anyone I know as illustrated in his Morning Drive feature “Runways to Fairways.”

3.27 First Tee Nassau County

In June 2005, Nassau County, The First Tee, The Metropolitan Golf Association Foundation, and The Metropolitan Section PGA launched The First of Nassau County at Eisenhower Park.  This collaborative effort offers youngsters from Nassau County a Life Skills and Golf Experience promoting golf to a whole new group of citizens.

Eisenhower Park, a 54-hole golf facility, is part of the Nassau County Parks and Recreation system.  The historic Red Course at Eisenhower hosts the PGA Champions Tour Commerce Bank Championship and recently celebrated the 75th Anniversary of Walter Hagen’s record breaking PGA victory.

3.26 John Huggan

John Huggan’s life has been forever absorbed within the game of golf. From his early years as one of Scotland’s leading amateur players, before later establishing himself as one of the world’s leading and most knowledgeable golf writers over the past 25 years, John has had a lifelong association with the sport.

3.25 Dottie Pepper

Dottie Pepper had a wonderful career that included 17 wins, two major victories and an outstanding Solheim Cup record. Kids today think that Cristie Kerr is tough, but I’ll pick Pepper to be in my corner every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Pepper’s intensity on the golf course, her passion for the game, and the fact that she wore her emotions on her sleeve, is what competition is all about. She loved golf and wanted to win. Nothing more, nothing less. There’s a reason the European team once put a picture of Pepper’s face on a punching bag–all competitors want to slay the dragon. Though I found it strange that the European team, a team that on one hand, would celebrate Seve Ballesteros and on the other, would take exception to Peppers fiery nature on the golf course. With Pepper, there was no face paint and no butt slapping. Just a plain old butt kicking. Perhaps she’s the first to say what all the kids are saying these days– “sorry I’m not sorry.”
